Social Neighborhood Empowerment & Health Advocacy

Initiative

SNEHA means “love and care” in English and this is what motivates us to support underprivileged children in Gauribidanur Taluk, Karnataka through activities coordinated at the Don Orione Horticultural Farm. The Farm is situated in Chandanaduru Village, Gauribidanur Taluk. This village, located 16 Km outside Gauribidanur city, has about 2000 households. Their sole occupation is agriculture. We work closely with the local school, and approximately 130 children participate in our activities. They and their families receive healthcare and education.

Objective

  • To learn from children about their concepts, ideas, situations, challenges, and successes and relate them to child rights and child protection

  • To develop their self-confidence and self-awareness and create opportunities for them to meet other children and exchange views on important local issues and global events

  • To develop and run specific projects and events that demonstrate ways in which the rights of the child, as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, can be practically implemented, with specific reference to child protection from a gender equity perspective

  • To link children to the services and resources of the Integrated Child Protection Scheme and other government and non-government schemes that strengthen their protection

  • To encourage children to participate in local, national, and international forums and decision-making processes to strengthen child protection

  • To educate adults on children’s rights and protection and citizens; rights and responsibilities

  • To celebrate childhood, as well as their achievements and successes in child protection

  • To achieve 8.50% lowered morbidity and 10% lowered mortality by 2020 through comprehensive clinic-based and mobile health care services, focusing on child mortality, safe motherhood, and prevention of diseases such as HIV, TB, malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia as well as contagious morbidity.

Activities

We engage with children in the local school at Chandanaduru and neighboring villages such as Shravanahalli, Hampasandra, Shenbuganagara, Aalaganahalli, and Indra Nagar through practical, and fun-filled activities to ensure their all-round development. We conduct;
